Tonight's beer:
Thick slabs of bitterness to open: pine and pithy citrus with layers of grass and flowers. Bready sweetness around the middle, with toast and more than enough caramel to turn the citrus to pulpy-juicy. Hints of dark dried fruits—plums and figs and dates—around the edges. Slow fade to dry, as bitterness lingers.
Thick and a bit chewy, with decent carbonation. Some sheets of stickiness gradually evolve to scrubbing and drying and something akin to refreshing. A smattering of boozy prickle, pretty subdued for 9.6% ABV.
One of the classics—if this wasn't the absolute first American Barleywine, it still pretty much defines the style. Intense as hell and imposingly complex, pretty well-balanced and nicely integrated. Big and brawny but nicely drinkable in a Big Sipping Beer way. Very superb.
