Stillwater Artisanal Surround

Tonight's beer:

Stillwater Artisanal Surround

Smoke up front, a thick veil that gradually parts to reveal coffee and dark chocolate; structural components include dark bread, caramel, molasses, and peat. Vanilla dances around the edges, with flickers of earth and dried fruits and maybe baking spices. The beer gradually works its way toward dry, into a sloping, lingering finish.

Maybe a bit thicker than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated, some viscous-syrupy stickiness then eventually softly drying and pretty clean. Roughly zero indication anywhere of the 10% ABV this beer is packing.

A serious stout, imposingly big but supple and graceful and drinkable—it lives up to my admittedly high expectations, given the brewer and the style. Searingly intense and staggeringly complex, composed and poised and well-integrated (but "balanced" seems like the answer to an entirely different question). Another big-time winner of a beer from Stillwater Artisanal.
