O'Connor Brigantine

Tonight's beer:

O'Connor Brigantine

Starts out with a burst of floral-grassy bitterness, then caramel and toast and hints of peat and earth. Flickers of citrus (mainly lemons) around the edges, plums and dates and figs and a touch of molasses through the middle. Gradually impressively dry at the finish.

Right around medium-bodied, maybe a little thicker; pretty decent carbonation. A bit of soft chewiness evolves to syrupy stickiness. Slowly—almost grudgingly—drying, edging toward refreshing. Alcohol present but subdued for 10.% ABV.

This is a superb—and definitely American—take on a Barleywine. Big and sturdy, imposingly intense; giddily complex but pretty well-balanced and *very* well-integrated. Devilishly subtle and scarily drinkable; this is a big enough beer, though, that you should probably sip your way through it.
