Tonight's beer:
Opens with a blast of grassy-earthy bitterness, followed closely by bread and toast and caramel. Dried fruits—plums, figs, dates, apples—lurk alongside peat and spice and vanilla. Wraps up slowly dry.
Maybe a bit thicker than medium-bodied, pretty well-carbonated. Some thin kinda-syrupy stickiness, then pretty clean, drying and almost-refreshing. Some boozy prickle, but really subdued for 10.5 ABV.
So, a local brewery is old enough to drink: Huzzah! I hope the folks at Heavy Seas go a long while further; it makes me happy to be as close as I am to such a good brewery. This beer is intense and complex and clearly wasn't harmed by half a year in the bottle. Nicely structured and well-integrated, balanced and very drinkable.
